THE blue-ribbon committee of the Quezon City Council has recommended the temporary closure of the Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA) on Aurora Boulevard to give way to a new investigation into the alleged excavations undertaken in search of the fabled Yamashita treasure on the school grounds.
After ending its two-month investigation, the committee asked the Commission on Higher Education to consider the possibility of temporarily closing down the school to allow a closer inspection of the alleged excavation sites. The body chaired by Councilor Dante de Guzman said the sites should be dug up to “clear all matters of doubt.”
The new probe, it added, should be conducted by an independent contractor as it asked previous inspectors from the city engineering department to inhibit themselves from the case.
In a resolution, the committee said it was “inclined to believe” that the alleged diggings were true despite findings of the city engineering department which had said there were no visible signs of excavations inside the campus. Previous ocular inspections by representatives of the city government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources had yielded negative results.
But De Guzman noted that the inspections had not been thorough since the purported openings to the excavations had been cemented. The Inquirer repeatedly tried to reach PSBA officials for comment but calls were not immediately returned. A staff member at the dean’s office said only Dean Raul Addatu was authorized to speak about the matter, but he was not available.
Complainants led by Antonio Magtalas had called the attention of the city government to the alleged diggings.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. yesterday belied reports of an ongoing search for the fabled Yamashita hoard inside the compound of the Philippine School of Business Administration on Aurora Boulevard.
“I sent a team to verify… and our investigators found negative traces of any illegal excavations purposely for treasure hunting,” Belmonte said during a conference organized by the Quezon City Press Club.
He said the public order and safety department under Manuel Sabalza dispatched probers last May 5 and June 6 to get to the bottom of the controversy.
Earlier, a faculty member exposed the alleged digging had no permit and endangered the lives of the students and employees because the building on the site could collapse anytime.
Belmonte said the property used to be owned by Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon, prompting treasure hunters to suspect that a part of the Yamashita trove was buried in the school grounds.
“The place was once a farm of the late president and was then part of Marikina. But as shown by our investigation, there is no truth to the reported excavations, much less the presence of hidden treasure,” he said.
It could be recalled that District 3 Councilor Dante de Guzman had conducted a hearing on the alleged PSBA diggings.
He said his committee would recommend the closure of the school if the building is found to be in danger caving in due to the excavations.
“The report will be out anytime soon,” De Guzman told Standard Today.

May safety certificate
