Desperate Housewives apologizes
The producers of the hit TV series “Desperate Housewives” on Thursday issued an apology for an insulting line that belittled the practitioners of the medical profession in the Philippines.
“The producers of Desperate Housewives and ABC Studios offer our sincere apologies for any offence caused [by the insulting remark] in the season premier,” ABC Network said in a short statement of apology obtained by ABS-CBN North America News Bureau.
ABC Network added: “There was no intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines.”
The network’s apology came after the Filipino community, particularly Filipino health workers, in the US and doctors in the Philippines deplored the insulting line uttered by actress Teri Hatcher’s character, Susan Mayer in the show’s Season 4 premier aired Sunday.

Comment:
Now what? Well, we showed the world that we can’t be insulted just like that.. I mean we pick our battles. So, will Pinoy’s next target be Conan O’brien, or maybe let’s just skip the hassle or lay-low for a while.
“Back to regular programming?”
I hope this is the last of this issue.

Update: 10/06/07
A spokesperson for ABC Studios has confirmed that a remark made by actress Teri Hatcher’s character in a recent episode of “Desperate Housewives” which has prompted ,angry reactions from Filipinos all over the world will be deleted.
Charissa Gilmore, vice president for media relations of the network that airs the TV series, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net), “Definitely the episode is being edited and has been removed from all possible digital platforms until the new version is available.”
The network’s action comes after Rico Foz, executive vice president of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns, said the group was demanding that the ABC television network immediately edit out the controversial scene in which character Susan Mayer Delfino (played by actress Teri Hatcher), tells her doctor: “OK, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Because I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
The remark made by Hatcher’s character–drew the ire of the Philippine Congress and the presidential palace.

Most of the reaction has been emotional rather than rational. Hoswever, I found an interesting perspective on the subject from another Filipino blog here:

Some food for thought to digest, certainly.

Freedom has its limitations, quite ironic in a sense, but when you cross another person’s rights then freedom can’t be applied. True, the United States has a better standard of education as compared with the system in the Philippines but does that give them the right to give disparaging comments on the system of education in the Philippines? Also true that there are plenty of cases of malpractice here in the Philippines but one or a few bad eggs should not be the basis for saying that all doctors that are the product of Philippine education are incompetent. Just the same as it would be utterly immoral for me to say that Americans are stupid by just basing my observation on one nincompoop. They call this hasty generalization in logic and it is a type of fallacy. I even read that a comment from another website saying that “It was not much different than saying ” I want to make sure these diplomas don’t come from some third world nation” I believe there is a very very big difference with pinpointing as with just saying it in general. What the comment would imply is that the Philippines has the lowest system of education as compared to all the other 3rd world nations. We (Filipinos) are not onion-skinned or what, I believe that the Americans or even other nationalities would be outraged if they heard somebody giving derogatory remarks about them.
Are you all kidding me??? Its a freakn’ joke!!! Ha ha ha ha!!! Hello….such hyprocrites….your all acting like you have not made a freakn’ joke your entire life!!!! It was hilarious, and entertaining!!! Im a filipino american also…… anyways….you guys just need to grow a backbone and take it for how it was…..A JOKE!!!
