Yahoo Messenger 9 + new features

November 7, 2007

Yahoo Messenger 9 (beta) was released last week.

I tried it out and found some nice features which were added to the messenger:

>  Flickr photo sharing
>  Viewing videos and maps inside the messenger window
>  enhanced contacts
>  available in Local languages (including Tagalog)
>  Additional emote icons
>  New skins

But for me, here are the best features that YM9 has:

1.  Forwarding of messages and calls when you are offline.

Yuperuuu!

If you are online, YM9 can now forward messages sent by your YM buddies to your phone via SMS!

I have activated this feature. I just don’t know if its free. If not, don’t know how much would it cost me.

But the incoming call forwarding feature requires you to have “phone out” credits.

One setback on this feature is that you’ll be able to receive spam messages. well, you can always turn it off anyway.

2. Grouping of messages

With YM9, all messages are grouped according to the person who sent them. Unlike with other YM versions where every message will be prefixed with whoever sent the message.

Just like in google talk (gtalk)

3. Voicemail to email delivery:

Just saw this feature yesterday.

If you are offline and someone left you a voice message, you can now choose to forward it to your email.

How to activate:

Click Contacts in the Messenger main window and select Call History.

At the bottom of the window that opens, click Change email, and follow the steps. It’s easy!

Nice nice!

what’s not nice: its big.. and consumes more memory than previous YM versions.

In my opinion, YM is the most used instant messaging client. I also have gtalk installed but most of my contacts prefer using YM. There are YM alternatives like pidgin. But hey, everyone is used to YM.

I just hope Yahoo develops a “lite” messenger where  users can just choose what features to include and not pack everything.

Download the YM 9 (beta) here.

A detailed explanation of the new features  can be found here.

An online version of yahoo messenger can be found here. Or you can use meebo.

i need forwarding messages on YM to mailbox, then i can push with seven or emoze. So I don’t need to be online on YM every time to wait mwssages.
