Germans boycott Nokia

The Germans are angry at Nokia.. Not because of a faulty product or high priced phones… but because its closing down its factory.

Nokia is closing down its factory in Bochum in the Ruhr industrial heartland. But it will open a new one in Romania. Why? Due to lower labor costs. More than 2,000 workers will be jobless.

Even politicians have joined in the call to boycott Nokia products. Something they need to do if they want German voters behind them.

Last year, two mobile phone companies also closed its factories in Germany, Motorola and BenQ.

Okay.. So the company decides to close its factory and move to a new location. The reason, for higher profit or so that the company won’t incur loses.

So why call for a boycott?

What they should have done is talk to Nokia, have an agreement with the company. Say less taxes or give them a “Tax Holiday” for them to stay. But maybe the German Government already did this but Nokia was firm on its decision to move.

There are other mobile Companies which also closed down like Motorola and  BenQ mobile. Why didn’t the Government and the people call for a boycott for those companies?

It has happened many times here in teh Philippines. Big names come and go. But we don’t call for a boycott of their products.

What the Government must must do now is to find new businesses to put up their companies in Germany to solve the lack of Jobs. But if they are showing to the world that this is how they treat companies who have provided livelihood for their people… I guess Business owners should first think about it.

    Yan Nguyen,

Thats what you call a business move. You cant blame a company for wanting more profits right?

And in fairness to nokia, they are selling cheaper phones compared to 2-3 years ago where new HIGH END phones would cost from P35k to P50K. Now you would hardly see new phones reach the 30K mark.

I’m an american.. now that Nokia is moving production to Romania and saving 10x in costs, will I be able to purchase nokia phones cheaper? If you believe that, you are dreaming! Nokia took the German subsidies and will now take the difference in production costs and pocket them!! I know I will never buy another Nokia product again. I call for a boycott of Nokia.

If this is their attitude, I wonder why they let Siemens’ cellphone division to close down.
