Mobile Phones as Radiation detectors

2008 January 24

They say mobile phones are harmful to the health due to the radiation that it emits. I saw on a news program that mobile phone radiation reduces sperm count thus causing infertility.

Hmmm.. I think that’s a cause for alarm.

But it looks like mobile phones – which emits radiation – will become a tool to detect radiation – the one that could eliminate humanity.

Researches are now developing sensors for mobile phones for it to be able to detect radiation from nuclear bombs and similar devices.

The idea is that the more people armed with radiation detectors the better chance we have of getting a terrorist before they detonate a device.

Along with the sensors, they are also developing a system whereby all phones will be able to inform a central station about radiation threats.

Such a system could blanket the nation with millions of cell phones equipped with radiation sensors able to detect even light residues of radioactive material. Because some cell phones already contain global positioning locators, the network of phones would serve as a tracking system, said physics professor Ephraim Fischbach. Fischbach is working with Jere Jenkins, director of Purdue’s radiation laboratories within the School of Nuclear Engineering.

There are two types of radiation, ionizing(nuclear) and non-ionizing radiation(cell phones). Ionizing is very harmful while non-ionizing is being researched.

Here is a snippet from the site:

The study points to a possible explanation for the 29% plummet in the sperm counts of British men over the past decade. It cannot be ignored or passed off as coincidence that while the use of cell phones has soared in the past ten years, male fertility in industrialized countries has suffered.

After all, cell phone radiation is all around us, especially in high population density areas and locations near cell phone towers.

Here is an excerpt from the site:

Do your research before buying a wireless device. Most cell phones sold in the United States list their Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in their manual. This number refers to the actual amount of RF energy absorbed by the body, so a lower number indicates a lower radiation exposure risk.

Invest in an airtube headset. While many people believe that using a headset offers some kind of protection, regular headsets actually intensify the radiation as it enters the ear canal. Avoid using your cell phone in metallic enclosures such as elevators, where radiation has nowhere to go but into your body.

Limit your cell phone use and choose cell phone radiation blockers as an extra measure of precaution. Until more is known about RF energy and the effects it has on the human body, it is up to you to protect yourself as best you can!

You know what they say about cigarette smoking. But it turns out that tobacco companies doctored their doctor’s research.

Radiation from cell phones may be far less harmful but I guess we should have an open mind and be sensible.
