N95: Mobile Google Maps vs Nokia Maps
Between Google Maps (Gmaps) and Nokia Maps (so NMaps?) which is better?
First, you have establish a connection. Either GPRS or Wi-Fi.
Lets start with Nokia Maps.
As you can see, it doesn’t have a detailed view of Manila.
It can only show major roads. However, it shows the location of Hotels, restaurants, airports, etc.
I tried to use the GPS feature..
But…
Major disappointment!
I was also trying to use the navigation feature where the phone would actually talk to give directions but its not working.
Now lets take a look at Google Maps mobile
Using the GPS feature in Google Maps, i can pinpoint my location.
The quickness of the downloading of images depends on your connection speed.
There is a detailed satellite view of the place.
Now look at the picture below..
It says your location is temporarily unavailable. That’s because i have lost GPRS connection.
In conclusion, nokia Maps is useful in finding airports and major establishments. But i do hope they would update their maps to show a satellite view (of places here in the Philippines). Meanwhile, although google maps shows you the the detailed map, it doesn’t have those tags for hotels, restaurants, airports, etc.
So which is better to use? Well, depends on your need.
But I’m sure in due time, nokia maps will be updated and we’ll be able to use all of its features.

I use Mapking for my Dopod D810. Works like a charm and I love the turn based direction. I don’t know if Mapking has an app for Nokia N95 though. BTW, I love your blog. I was wondering if you’d like to exchange links with my blog http://www.pinoy-reviews.com. If you are, let me know by dropping me an email or leaving a comment. Thanks.
Google Maps has worked wonders for me. Specially when I’m looking for an address or business. Google Maps will show an area of the location, address and phone numbers. No wrting down the phone number on a separate piece of paper, with a press of a button. . it dials it for you. Once Google Maps has pinpointed your location, it will show your highlighted route and as you are driving. . . keep track of your location. Only drawback in my opinion is when looking for a common business, ie. McDonalds. . . you have to keep pressing ‘next’ to find the one nearest your current location.
Nokia maps is my preferred map application. Mainly because I can download all the maps I need through wifi/internet and it stays on the phone for good. Then I dont have to keep using my data connection later on when searching my map, which I would need to do with google maps.
If I am out and about I dont really want a satellite picture of where I am eating up my data connection and costing me money.
Nokia Map Loader only works on Windows, needs .net framework, and if you add a new map the map loader deletes all your existing maps so you’ll have to download them all over again.
But you don’t need Nokia Map Loader. http://nokiamaps.moo.no links to all maps on Nokia’s smart2go server. Works with any browser on any operating system, including Mac and Linux. No need to install anything on your computer, so it works when you’re in a hotel, school, at work, or in an internet cafe.
If your phone talks WiFi or 3G you can add and update maps from your phone’s web browser without even touching a computer.
